Anxiety can feel like nervousness, worry or self-doubt.  Sometimes it can be easy to spot while other times it may not be.  Anxiety can be a usual response to stress, however over-whelming or recurring anxiety and feelings of dread that come from nowhere in-particular, can deeply impact people.  Obtrusive thoughts, confusion and lack of concentration can be signs of anxiety and sometimes people with anxiety can feel depressed. Symptoms of anxiety can be physical, causing health problems like high blood pressure, digestive difficulties and nausea.    Counselling can help regain control of anxious thoughts and feelings.

Depression – Beyond Blue

Depression is a low mood that lasts for a long time and affects your every day life.  At its most severe, depression can be life threatening because it can make you feel suicidal. It can make ordinary activities such as getting out of bed, bathing and dressing feel impossible.  At times like this people can feel isolated and alone. Depression casts a cloud over experiences that have capacity to make us feel good. It can erode feelings of success and achievement. Counselling can help us to understand the root of the depressed feelings, to learn strategies to change negative self-talk and find ways to regain control over life.

Trauma is the mind or body being overwhelmed by traumatic events.  Psychological trauma in particular occurs as a result of a distressing event that leads us to form a particular belief about our self, the world and other people.  It also destroys our assumptions of trust.  Experiencing a traumatic event can leave people feeling socially isolated, disconnected and numb.  Feelings of vulnerability and fear may increase following the event.
Trauma is our own perception of a situation or an event and therefore not everyone will react to the same things in the same way.  Symptoms can take weeks, months or years to surface.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health problem you may develop after experiencing traumatic events. The condition was first recognised in war veterans. It has had different names in the past, such as ‘shell shock’, but it’s not only diagnosed in soldiers. A wide range of traumatic experiences can be causes of PTSD. “When something traumatic happens in your life it rocks you to the core. The world is no longer a safe place. It becomes somewhere that bad things can and do happen.” Choosing a recovery path that helps you heal the disruption to your thought patterns and behaviour by working on both the logical and the instinctual is the most effective means of treating PTSD.  Counselling is a good option that provides a strong foundation that will enable you to process and express thoughts and feelings. CBT and EMDR can also be helpful in treating PTSD.

Growing up feeling different can shape us as humans as we are in a world where social stigmas can prevent people from being who they truly are.  You may be looking to explore your sexuality and gender,  how you identify and how that might be changing and what impact your identity has had and is having on your life. Coming to terms with our own sexuality, potentially facing homophobic attitudes and discrimination and suffering rejection from loved ones, can cause significant emotional and psychological distress.  Counselling offers a space to talk through the problems you are facing, confidentially and in an environment of safe non judgmental support. It enables you to explore painful and confusing emotions in a safe way.  You can explore issues around sex and relationships.

I can support you with feelings of anxiety and depression and to explore the role of coping strategies in your life. I work in a non-directive and creative way with whatever you bring to the session.  There is no right or wrong way to do therapy it is your journey to a greater understanding of yourself and your life. Counselling can help to provide you with a non-judgmental and empathetic space in which you can share your thoughts and feelings and find direction.
